Small remnants of the original wetland survive, including Travis Wetland in Burwood. Orana Wildlife Park, New Zealand's only open-range zoo, and Willowbank Wildlife Reserve are both in Harewood, and a marine mammal sanctuary around nearby Banks Peninsula protects the Hector's dolphin.
