Animal welfare in practice in Christchurch
The SPCA's Christchurch Centre at 14 Wilmers Road, Hornby, shows animal welfare work end to end: it takes cruelty reports by phone, responds to emergencies seven days a week, rehomes animals by appointment, handles lost and found animals and offers desexing. Animals waiting for homes range from dogs and cats to rabbits and guinea pigs.
The centre has about 40 staff and is supported by more than 500 volunteers, and it lists animal-centre volunteering and fostering roles on the SPCA's national website. For a student of animal welfare, that scale means a wide range of real cases: intake, health checks, behaviour, fostering and adoption matching.
