Seeing livestock up close in Christchurch

The Canterbury A&P Show, held each November at Canterbury Agricultural Park, is, by its organisers' description, the largest A&P show in New Zealand. Its competition schedule covers cattle, sheep and alpaca, as well as shearing, and the grand parade brings breeds and handlers into the main ring.

Rare breeds are also kept in the city. Willowbank Wildlife Reserve in Harewood breeds Arapawa Island goats, kunekune pigs and Damara sheep as part of a programme with an offsite farm, and lists the Rare Breeds Society among its partners. That gives livestock students a chance to see heritage genetics that are uncommon on commercial farms.
