Horses and equine care around Christchurch
Christchurch has a strong racing and show-horse tradition. Addington Raceway, developed in the 1930s for harness racing, describes itself as the home of New Zealand harness racing and hosts the New Zealand Trotting Cup each November, with the 2026 Cup Day on 10 November.
The same month, the Canterbury A&P Show at Canterbury Agricultural Park includes equestrian competition among its 5,000-plus classes, Clydesdales in the grand parade and, in 2026, a 'Year of the Horse' equestrian parade. Between the two, students can see racehorses, heavy horses and show horses being prepared, presented and handled within a few days of each other.
