Horticulture study in the Garden City
The Christchurch Botanic Gardens, founded in 1863 inside the loop of the Avon River, give horticulture students a large living reference collection. The New Zealand gardens were laid out between 1910 and 1927 by curator James Young; the rose garden has 104 beds of climbing, standard and hybrid tea roses; and the conservatories include Cuningham House, the Fern House and Garrick House, home to the country's largest publicly owned cacti and succulent collection.
The Canterbury Horticultural Society is based at The Kiosk in the gardens. It runs a monthly Garden Life talk, workshops, courses, demonstrations and garden tours, plus specialist groups for flowers, chrysanthemums, daffodils, and fruit and vegetables. Membership also links into more than 40 affiliated garden clubs, a practical way to meet local growers.
