Nature park management in and around Christchurch
Christchurch has several examples of natural areas managed inside or beside a city. Travis Wetland in Burwood is 116 hectares of former dairy farmland under an ecological restoration programme; it won the Urban Sustainability category of the Green Ribbon Awards in 2009, and the Travis Wetland Trust still publishes monthly updates on the site.
Riccarton Bush / Pūtaringamotu is a small remnant of podocarp forest with kahikatea up to 600 years old, kept open free of charge during daylight hours. On the Port Hills, a chain of public reserves with walking and mountain-biking tracks is linked by the Summit Road; the Summit Road Scenic Society was formed in 1948 to look after them, a long-running example of community-led reserve management.
