Dairy farming knowledge around Christchurch
Dairying has grown strongly in the districts around Christchurch, and the city is close to one of the South Island's main dairy research and demonstration networks. The South Island Dairying Development Centre (SIDDC) is an industry-funded partnership of seven dairy-sector organisations, and it supports the Lincoln University Dairy Farm at Lincoln, about 15 km from the city.
SIDDC runs focus days where farmers and rural professionals look at results and practice; its October 2026 focus day covered climate, pasture quality and beef-on-dairy, and joining its mailing list brings invitations to future events. Lincoln University itself traces its roots to 1878 and teaches crop and animal science and pasture work.
