Studying marine life from Christchurch
Banks Peninsula, the ancient volcanic complex south of the city, is the closest place to apply marine studies. The Department of Conservation describes a marine mammal sanctuary around the peninsula that protects the rare Hector's dolphin / upokohue, and two marine reserves: the Akaroa Marine Reserve and the Pōhatu Marine Reserve in Flea Bay.
Closer to the city, the International Antarctic Centre beside Christchurch Airport houses rescued kororā (little penguins), and visitors can learn about their rescue. The centre also notes the city is one of only five recognised gateways to the continent, a link worth knowing for anyone interested in polar and Southern Ocean wildlife.

Where can I see Hector's dolphins near Christchurch?
The Department of Conservation says a marine mammal sanctuary around Banks Peninsula protects the rare Hector's dolphin / upokohue, and recommends the peninsula's coastline for seeing them. The Akaroa Marine Reserve and the Pōhatu Marine Reserve in Flea Bay also protect sea life on the peninsula.
Can I see penguins in Christchurch itself?
Yes. The International Antarctic Centre at 38 Orchard Road, next to the airport, houses rescued kororā (little penguins) that visitors can see as part of its experiences.
