Bird care study and practice in Christchurch
Christchurch has several places to watch how native birds are kept and cared for. Willowbank Wildlife Reserve in Harewood features North Island brown kiwi, great spotted kiwi (roroa), kea, South Island kākā and takahē, with scheduled kea feeding. Orana Wildlife Park breeds kākāriki karaka, brown kiwi, pāteke and whio for release.
Seabirds and wetland birds are also close by. The International Antarctic Centre houses rescued kororā (little penguins), and Travis Wetland in Burwood, a restored wetland on former dairy farmland, is home to birds such as the New Zealand scaup (pāpango). The wetland trust publishes monthly newsletters and pages on the birds recorded there, useful for learning identification and habitat needs.
