Practising photography in Christchurch
Christchurch Photographic Society meets every Wednesday and has more than 100 members interested in all kinds of photography. Its weekly meetings combine competitions, tutorials and guest presentations, and it runs field trips, giving photographers regular deadlines and feedback on their work.
For landscapes, the Port Hills rise between the flat city and Lyttelton Harbour, and the Summit Road links reserves and tracks along the crest; the hills are visible for many kilometres from the north and west. Christchurch Art Gallery Te Puna o Waiwhetū collects photography, including Laurence Aberhart's 1981 view from Bluff Hill, and in 2026 staged a survey of more than 65 photographs from Mark Adams' 50-year career.
