Farming has shaped the region since the nineteenth century. Pastoral farming, especially dairying, supported Auckland's early growth, and the region's volcanic soils have long been used for crops such as kūmara. At the southern edge of the region, Pukekohe's market gardens became a major source of vegetables for North Island cities after the main trunk railway opened in 1907. Closer in, Ambury Regional Park in Māngere Bridge still runs as a working sheep and dairy farm.
