Auckland Botanic Gardens (opens in a new tab)
The gardens at 102 Hill Road, Manurewa, cover 64 hectares, including 10 hectares of native forest, and opened to the public in 1982. They hold themed collections such as the Edible Garden, Gondwana Arboretum, Harakeke Collection and Rose Garden, and entry is free.
The gardens run plant trials, workshops and drop-in advice sessions, and they show which plants suit Auckland's climate.
Domain Wintergardens (opens in a new tab)
Inside the Auckland Domain, the Wintergardens include an unheated temperate house, a heated tropical house, and a fernery set in an old quarry on the slope of a small volcanic cone. Heritage New Zealand lists the complex as a Category I historic place.
It is a place to study glasshouse growing and seasonal display planting, and to see tropical plants that cannot be grown outdoors in Auckland.
Shakespear Regional Park and Open Sanctuary (opens in a new tab)
At the tip of the Whangaparāoa Peninsula, a pest-proof fence across the peninsula protects a sanctuary of bays, wetlands and forest. Trapping and monitoring keep it predator-free while it stays open to visitors.
The sanctuary shows how a public park can stay open to visitors while being managed for conservation.
