Auckland Festival of Photography (opens in a new tab)
A citywide photography festival held across Auckland's galleries, project spaces and public sites, with outdoor exhibitions and awards programmes. The 2026 festival ran from 29 May to 14 June.
Visitors can see exhibitions by both emerging and established photographers, and the festival runs exhibitor, youth and music photography awards.
Auckland Art Gallery Toi o Tāmaki and the E H McCormick Research Library (opens in a new tab)
The gallery is at the corner of Wellesley Street East and Kitchener Street in central Auckland. It also houses the E H McCormick Research Library and Archive.
The gallery's exhibitions and research library are useful for studying how images are composed and how art is documented.
Cape Rodney-Okakari Point Marine Reserve (Goat Island) (opens in a new tab)
This marine reserve near Leigh, about an hour and a half's drive north of Auckland, was established in 1975. DOC describes its fish as abundant and friendly, and all marine life in the reserve is protected.
Snorkelling and diving here are good practice for underwater and nature photography.
