Marine studies in Auckland
North of the city near Leigh, the Cape Rodney-Okakari Point Marine Reserve, better known as Goat Island, was established in 1975. Nothing in the reserve may be taken, disturbed, killed or damaged, and DOC describes its fish as abundant and friendly. That makes it one of the most accessible places to snorkel or dive and watch a protected reef ecosystem. The University of Auckland's Leigh Marine Laboratory is next to the reserve, and the Goat Island Discovery Centre explains the local ecosystem.
In the city itself, SEA LIFE Kelly Tarlton's Aquarium, which opened in 1985, keeps a colony of sub-Antarctic penguins and has a shark tunnel. It also runs New Zealand's only turtle rescue centre. Between them, the reserve and the aquarium show both wild marine life and the work involved in rescuing and caring for it.

Where can I snorkel in a marine reserve near Auckland?
The Cape Rodney-Okakari Point (Goat Island) Marine Reserve near Leigh is about an hour and a half's drive north of Auckland. DOC says it offers some of the best snorkelling and scuba diving close to Auckland. Taking or disturbing anything in the reserve is illegal.
Is marine research carried out near Auckland?
Yes. DOC notes that the University of Auckland's Leigh Marine Laboratory is based next to the Goat Island marine reserve, and the nearby Goat Island Discovery Centre introduces visitors to the reserve's ecosystem.
