Photography in Auckland
Each winter, Auckland hosts the Auckland Festival of Photography, which describes itself as New Zealand's premium international photographic festival. It brings together emerging and established photographers in galleries, project spaces and public sites around the city, including outdoor exhibitions. The 2026 festival ran from 29 May to 14 June, with awards including exhibitor, youth and music photography categories.
Outside festival season, Auckland Art Gallery Toi o Tāmaki in the central city holds exhibitions and the E H McCormick Research Library and Archive. For nature work, Tiritiri Matangi's open sanctuary offers endangered birds in the wild, and the Goat Island marine reserve near Leigh has some of the best snorkelling and diving close to Auckland. Auckland Botanic Gardens has also run photography workshops.

When is the Auckland Festival of Photography?
The festival is held around late May and June. In 2026 it ran from 29 May to 14 June, with festival awards and online activations starting from 15 May. Its programme spans galleries, project spaces and public sites across Auckland.
Where can I photograph wildlife near Auckland?
Tiritiri Matangi, 4 km off the Whangaparāoa Peninsula, is an open sanctuary where takahē, kōkako, tīeke and hihi live in the wild. For underwater photography, DOC says the Goat Island marine reserve near Leigh has some of the best snorkelling and scuba diving close to Auckland.
