Animal welfare work in Auckland is concentrated at the SPCA's centre on Westney Road in Māngere. As well as rehoming animals, the centre has a specialised call centre and a large team of warranted animal welfare inspectors who cover about 7,980 square kilometres of the Auckland region. It also has a farm area, so its work is not limited to cats and dogs.
For anyone studying welfare standards, the centre shows how a large urban shelter deals with intake, treatment, rehabilitation and adoption on one site. The SPCA advertises a range of volunteer roles there, including animal care, canine, cattery and front-of-house work, and a student placement role for people who need practical animal experience.
