Horse breeding in Auckland

South Auckland is home to the centre of New Zealand's thoroughbred bloodstock trade. Each January, New Zealand Bloodstock runs its Karaka sales week at the Karaka Sales Centre. The 2026 edition was the 100th National Yearling Sale, and NZB says it returned more than $96 million to breeders and consignors.

The sale runs in several stages: Book 1 over two days, then Book 2 and the Karaka Summer Sale. For Karaka 2027, NZB has scheduled the Karaka Millions raceday at Ellerslie on 23 January, followed by Book 1 on 24 and 25 January. NZB says the Karaka sale has produced many modern and all-time champion racehorses. For someone studying breeding, the sales show how pedigree, conformation and preparation affect the value of a young horse.
