Watching and caring for birds around Auckland

The Auckland Region has some of the best places in the country to see native birds behaving naturally. Tiritiri Matangi, 4 km off the Whangaparāoa Peninsula, is a DOC open sanctuary. Predators have been removed from the former farm island and native trees replanted, and takahē, kōkako, tīeke (saddleback) and hihi (stitchbird) now live there in the wild. A public ferry runs out from the mainland.

Shorebirds can be seen much closer to the city. Ambury Regional Park, on the Manukau Harbour in Māngere Bridge, attracts large numbers of migratory shorebirds such as tōrea and kuaka outside their breeding season. Shakespear Open Sanctuary, at the tip of the Whangaparāoa Peninsula, is protected by a pest-proof fence and ongoing trapping. Seeing birds in these sites gives useful context for diet, habitat and handling topics.
