Horticulture in Auckland
Auckland Botanic Gardens in Manurewa covers 64 hectares, including 10 hectares of native forest, and has been open to the public since 1982. Entry is free. Its themed gardens include an Edible Garden, Herb Garden, Rose Garden, Rock Garden, Camellia Garden, Gondwana Arboretum and a Harakeke Collection. The gardens trial plants to find species that do well in Auckland's climate without pesticides, and staff give advice through workshops and drop-in sessions.
In the central city, the Domain Wintergardens in the Auckland Domain show glasshouse growing: an unheated temperate house with seasonal displays, a tropical house, and a fernery set in a former quarry. South of the city, Pukekohe's volcanic soils have been used for commercial vegetable growing since the nineteenth century. Together these sites cover display, conservation and production horticulture.
