Joining Wellington's photography community

The Wellington Photographic Society has existed long enough to mark its 125th anniversary. Its stated aim is to encourage the study and practice of photography through meetings, competitions and a newsletter, and it holds an annual public exhibition. The 2025 exhibition ran from late September to early October at Thistle Hall on Cuba Street, with landscapes, portraits, street scenes and wildlife, much of it shot around Wellington. The society also publishes Impact, its official newsletter, and has sought members for a Volunteer Wellington project.

Every second August, Te Papa hosts Photobook/NZ, the national photobook festival. Massey University, Te Papa and PhotoForum run it, and it connects photographers with small-press publishers and readers. Te Papa's own photography collection ranges from the Burton Brothers' 19th-century views to Brian Brake's life's work, so you can study landscape and documentary practice in one building. The collection also covers pictorialist work from the 1920s to 1950s.
