Photography in Dunedin
Dunedin offers architecture, coast and wildlife within a short drive. Dunedin Railway Station, designed by George Troup in a Flemish Renaissance style with dark basalt and pale Oamaru stone, is believed locally to be the most photographed building in the country. On Saturday mornings the Otago Farmers Market fills the grounds to the north.
South of the city, the DOC track to Tunnel Beach leads to a wave-battered sandstone headland and a tunnel cut in the 1870s, a subject that rewards planning around tides and swell. At the end of the Otago Peninsula, Pukekura/Taiaroa Head has royal albatross, seabirds and fur seals for wildlife work at a respectful distance.
The Dunedin Photographic Society, formed in 1890, meets twice a month and runs competitions, photowalks and field trips.
Photography in Dunedin: questions
Is there a photography club in Dunedin?
The Dunedin Photographic Society was formed in March 1890. It meets on the second and fourth Monday of each month at 7.30pm and runs competitions, photowalks and field trips.
What should I know before photographing Tunnel Beach?
The DOC return walk from the car park to the tunnel and beach is about 2.6 km and takes about an hour. DOC warns the beach is unsafe at high tide and in rough seas, that large waves can arrive without warning, and that people should stay at least 20 m from resting seals and sea lions.
