Practising marine studies in Wellington

Wellington's south coast faces Cook Strait. Strong tidal currents and southern swells there feed a rich rocky-reef system. Taputeranga Marine Reserve protects 855 hectares of this coast, about 6 km from the city centre, and DOC says more than 180 fish species have been recorded along the south coast. About 400 seaweed species grow within the reserve, and kelp in sheltered spots such as Island Bay can reach 20 m. Little blue penguins breed along the coast in protected nest boxes.

The Island Bay Marine Education Centre has run hands-on marine programmes since 1996 from its Bait House Aquarium in Island Bay, and it opens to the public on Sundays. Further west, beyond Red Rocks, Sinclair Head is a non-breeding haul-out for New Zealand fur seals. Numbers there range from more than 300 in winter to about 50 in summer, which makes it a practical place to study marine mammal behaviour from a respectful distance.

Marine Studies in Wellington: questions

Can I go rock pooling in Wellington's marine reserve?

Yes. DOC describes Taputeranga Marine Reserve as offering easy access for snorkelling, diving, tide pooling and walking. Taking or disturbing any marine life or materials is prohibited. DOC also posts water-quality notices for the reserve, so check its page before you go.

When are fur seals easiest to see near Wellington?

The non-breeding colony at Sinclair Head peaks in winter, with more than 300 seals then and about 50 in summer. Wikipedia notes that seals may be seen particularly between May and August, reached by the coastal track past Red Rocks from Ōwhiro Bay.
