Practising marine studies in Dunedin
The Otago Peninsula and harbour put a lot of marine life within reach of the city. The University of Otago's NZ Marine Studies Centre at Portobello runs marine education programmes with touch tanks and local sea life displays, though visits are for pre-booked schools and groups only.
At Pukekura/Taiaroa Head, New Zealand fur seals/kekeno breed on the headland and seabirds such as Otago shags and little penguins feed at sea and nest on land. DOC asks visitors to stay at least 10 m from seals. Along the coast at Tunnel Beach, fur seals and sea lions rest on the sand, and DOC recommends keeping 20 m away.
The Dunedin Wildlife Hospital treats marine and coastal animals including penguins, seals and sea lions, showing how injured marine wildlife is cared for before release.

Can I visit the NZ Marine Studies Centre in Portobello?
The centre at 185 Hatchery Road, Portobello, is open on weekdays to pre-booked schools and groups only. It offers marine education programmes for all ages, with touch tanks and displays of local sea life, and links visitors to marine research at the University of Otago.
Where can I see seals near Dunedin?
Pukekura/Taiaroa Head is a breeding site for New Zealand fur seals, and DOC asks people to keep at least 10 m away. Fur seals and sea lions also rest at Tunnel Beach, where DOC advises staying at least 20 m away. Tunnel Beach is unsafe at high tide and in rough seas.
