Studying horticulture in Wellington's gardens
Wellington Botanic Garden ki Paekākā covers 25 hectares of Kelburn hillside. The Royal New Zealand Institute of Horticulture recognises it as a Garden of National Significance, and Wellington City Council has managed it since 1891. Its curated collections combine international and native plants, a rock garden and the Lady Norwood Rose Garden. The Discovery Garden is a teaching space focused on food, healing and resource plants, and the garden runs regular guided walks and lunchtime botanical talks. The site's history as a reserve goes back to 1844, when the New Zealand Company set aside a 5.26-hectare strip of podocarp forest for a botanic garden.
A few kilometres away, Ōtari-Wilton's Bush is the country's only public botanic garden devoted solely to native plants. About 1,100 native species, hybrids and cultivars are grouped by family or as recreated ecosystems, and almost all were grown from cuttings or seed collected in their original habitats. The garden has run since 1926, and entry is free.
