Horticulture in Dunedin
Dunedin Botanic Garden, founded in 1863, is New Zealand's oldest botanic garden. Its 28 hectares on the Town Belt include an extensive rhododendron dell in the upper garden and the Winter Garden, a heated Edwardian glasshouse, in the lower garden. The New Zealand Gardens Trust rated it a Garden of International Significance in 2010.
On the Otago Peninsula ridge, the gardens at Larnach Castle were the first in the South Island to receive the same rating. In the city centre, Lan Yuan, the Dunedin Chinese Garden, was prefabricated in Shanghai and opened in 2008, but its plants were sourced in New Zealand rather than imported.
Together these give a horticulture student three very different gardens to compare, from a public botanic collection to a ridge-top private garden and a formal Chinese design.
