Practising photography in Hamilton
Every March, Balloons Over Waikato fills Hamilton's sky with hot air balloons. Morning launches run from Innes Common at Hamilton Lake, and the ZURU Night Glow lights the balloons after dark. It is one of Aotearoa's largest free events. It is good practice for early light, moving subjects and night exposures.
Hamilton Gardens publishes its own guidance on autumn colour and on light at different times of day. It also has clear rules for working photographers. Shoots in the Enclosed Gardens must be booked through a request form, and drones need written permission from the Hamilton Airport control tower because the gardens lie under the air ambulance flight path. Learning those steps is useful preparation for paid work.
Photography in Hamilton: questions
Do I need permission to photograph at Hamilton Gardens?
Photo shoots in the Enclosed Gardens need to be arranged through Hamilton Gardens with a request form, and garden closures and extra facilities may cost more. Drones require written permission from the Hamilton Airport control tower before garden staff can approve them.
When is Balloons Over Waikato?
Balloons Over Waikato is held in March. The next festival is listed for 13–19 March 2027, with morning flights from Innes Common at Hamilton Lake and the ZURU Night Glow as a free, ticketed evening event.
