Bird care and seabird monitoring in Tauranga
Mauao, at the harbour entrance, has kororā (little blue penguin) colonies and a mainland colony of grey-faced petrels. The Western Bay Wildlife Trust monitors both species there and on Moturiki Island, and also runs a wildlife rescue service across the western Bay of Plenty. In a project reported in January 2025, the trust and the Mauao Trust worked together to give the penguins alternative nesting sites, improve their habitat, monitor them regularly and teach the public about kororā.
Mauao is currently closed to the public until further notice after large slips. Check Tauranga City Council's Mauao page for its status before planning a visit. For general animal handling experience, the SPCA's Tauranga centre in Gate Pa lists volunteer and foster roles.
