Studying bird care from Hamilton
Hamilton Zoo keeps North Island kākā in its Free Flight Aviary, which the zoo says is the largest of its kind in New Zealand. The kākā are part of a breed-for-release programme. Breeding runs from September to February, and birds pass health checks by the zoo's veterinary team and a quarantine period before transfer to designated sanctuaries. That gives bird care students a clear local example of captive husbandry linked to wild recovery.
Wild birds are part of city life too. Waikato Regional Council's Hamilton Halo project controls predators at tūī breeding sites within 20 km of the city and encourages planting for year-round nectar. Tūī numbers in Hamilton increased 25-fold between 2004 and 2019, which shows how habitat and predator work affect bird populations.
