Studying animal welfare from Hamilton

The SPCA's Hamilton Centre is at 49 Northway Street in Te Rapa. It takes enquiries from people who want to volunteer at the centre or to foster animals, and it runs an op shop with its own volunteer roles. Fostering and centre volunteering show the day-to-day side of animal welfare work: intake, care routines and preparing animals for rehoming.

For a wider view, Hamilton Zoo says it is committed to high standards of animal welfare and contributes to conservation, and Hamilton City Council has worked with the Waikato Bat Alliance on protecting wild long-tailed bats. Together, these show three different settings for animal welfare in the same city: companion animals, zoo animals and wild native species.
