Seeing sheep and cattle farming from Wellington
Battle Hill Farm Forest Park at Pāuatahanui, near Porirua, is a Greater Wellington regional park run as a working farm. It covers 500 hectares of rolling paddocks, native bush and forestry, and the farm has sheep and other livestock. Henry Abbott cleared the land and stocked it with cattle after buying it in 1860, and his family farmed it until 1975. Some areas close during lambing and calving, and dogs are not allowed because of the stock. Rangers run free school group visits that introduce the farm animals, based at the Ken Gray Education Centre in the middle of the park.
East of the Remutaka Range, Masterton in the Wairarapa hosts the Golden Shears each March. The championship began in 1961 at the War Memorial Stadium after the local Young Farmers Club proposed a shearing competition, and it now runs shearing, woolhandling and wool pressing events. Watching the open grades shows the speed and handling skills behind wool harvesting.
