Sheep and cattle farming from Napier
Napier has long been tied to pastoral farming: the city sits at the centre of what is described as the largest wool centre in the Southern Hemisphere, and its port ships wool and frozen meat. Napier Port's 2026 nine-month results named meat among the cargo driving container growth.
The best place to see the region's livestock is the Hawke's Bay A&P Show, held each October at the Tōmoana Showgrounds in Hastings. The A&P Society, founded in 1858, runs halter cattle, AFFCO beef and lamb, shearing and wool handling, and fleece competitions, along with a young stock judging challenge. Watching the judging is a practical way to see what buyers and judges look for in prime stock and wool.

When is the Hawke's Bay A&P Show?
The show is held each October at the Tōmoana Showgrounds in Hastings; the 2025 show ran on 23 and 24 October. In 2025 the society said it was likely to move the 2026 date earlier, so check the society's website for the current year.
Which livestock competitions are held at the show?
The Hawke's Bay A&P Society lists a halter cattle competition, AFFCO beef and lamb competitions, a pig competition, a young stock judging challenge, shearing and wool handling, and fleece classes, along with equestrian competitions.
