Sheep and cattle farming near Palmerston North
In nearby Feilding, the saleyards are among the largest livestock yards in the Southern Hemisphere. More than 50,000 cattle and 450,000 sheep are sold there each year by PGG Wrightson and Carrfields teams, with prime stock sold on Mondays and store stock on Fridays. Weekly Friday tours at 11am, led by local farmers, take visitors through the 330 sheep pens and into the cattle rostrum to watch the auction process.
Massey University also farms sheep and beef close to the city. Its six farm units cover just over 2,000 hectares, including two sheep and beef farms and a mixed sheep, beef and dairy-support farm, and most of that land is near the Manawatū campus. Sale-day prices and stock condition at Feilding give a weekly read on the regional market that complements farm-level study.
