Photography in Napier
Napier's centre was rebuilt in Art Deco style after the 1931 earthquake, and the city now calls itself the Art Deco Capital. The Art Deco Trust, based at the Art Deco Centre on Memorial Square, runs guided walks and car tours of the buildings. Each February the Art Deco Festival fills those streets with vintage cars and period costume; the 2026 festival ran from 19 to 22 February.
For practice and feedback, the Hawke's Bay Photographic Society, which grew out of the Napier Camera Club of about 1978, meets at 7pm on the last Tuesday of each month from January to November in Taradale, and visitors are welcome. It runs monthly competitions and field trips, including a 2026 outing to the Pandora estuary. At Kahukura – Hawke's Bay Museum, the collection includes historic portraits by photographers such as the Burton Brothers and George Pulman.

When is the Art Deco Festival in Napier?
Hawke's Bay Tourism says Napier holds the festival every February. The 2026 festival ran from Thursday 19 to Sunday 22 February. The Art Deco Trust, which runs the festival, also runs guided walks through the year.
Is there a photography club in Napier?
The Hawke's Bay Photographic Society meets at 7pm on the last Tuesday of each month from January to November at 5 Devonshire Place, Taradale, and welcomes visitors. Members-only workshops are held on the second Tuesday.
