Horticulture in Palmerston North

Victoria Esplanade gives Palmerston North a free, year-round plant collection to learn from. The Dugald MacKenzie Rose Garden, opened in 1968, has more than 5,000 roses in named beds, and its trial grounds host the New Zealand Rose Society's international rose trials, run with the city council since 1969. Trial roses are assessed three times in their first growing season and four times in their second, and the 55th trials' awards were announced in December 2025.

The Esplanade's camellia collection of more than 1,000 plants was recognised as an International Camellia Garden of Excellence in 2025, and its conservatory grows tropical plants from Africa, the Americas and Oceania. Each November the Manawatū Garden Festival showcases gardens around the region; the 2025 programme featured 20 gardens over five days. Massey University's seven-hectare orchard on the Manawatū campus is used as an outdoor classroom for horticultural science.
