Horticulture in and around Napier
Hawke's Bay is the country's largest producer of apples, pears and stone fruit, and much of that crop leaves through Napier Port, where apples were singled out in the 2026 nine-month results. The Hawke's Bay Farmers' Market, held every Sunday morning at the Tōmoana Showgrounds in Hastings, is an easy place to see what local growers have in season.
Within the city, the council's gardens show a range of growing conditions. The Botanical Gardens climb the slopes of Napier Hill, the Kennedy Park rose gardens, opened in 1951 on former lagoon land, now hold around 5000 roses, and the Centennial Gardens at the foot of Bluff Hill were built in 1974 in an old quarry. At EIT's Taradale campus, a horticulture group planted about 350 native species at the Ōtātara Outdoor Learning Centre in 2019.
