Wildlife conservation and management around Napier

The Cape Kidnappers peninsula, south-east of Napier, shows two models of conservation side by side. The gannet reserve is public land managed by DOC, with rules on distance from nesting birds and a seasonal closure of the plateau track. Next to it, Cape Sanctuary is a privately funded 'mainland island' that has run since 2006 and has returned many endangered species to the peninsula. Its kiwi population is now large enough that it can give about twenty birds a year to other projects.

Closer to the city, the Ōtātara Outdoor Learning Centre on EIT's Taradale campus teaches ecological restoration and biodiversity management, and community groups can ask to use the site. The Ahuriri Estuary, used by more than 70 waterbird species, is a useful place to see how an urban wetland is managed alongside walkers and cyclists.

Wildlife Conservation & Management in Napier: questions

What is Cape Sanctuary?

Cape Sanctuary describes itself as New Zealand's largest privately owned and funded mainland island conservation project, running since 2006 on the Cape Kidnappers peninsula. It holds around six hundred Eastern brown kiwi and a separate little spotted kiwi population, and its next phase focuses on seabirds.

Are there rules for visiting the Cape Kidnappers gannet reserve?

Yes. DOC asks visitors to stay behind barriers or at least five metres from nesting gannets. Dogs, horses, fires, camping and firearms are not allowed, and vehicles may not leave the beach to enter the reserve.
