Wildlife conservation and management around Palmerston North
The city council's Turitea Reserve shows conservation management at landscape scale. Working with the community, the council has placed thousands of traps across 40 square kilometres of the reserve, targeting possums, rats, stoats and feral cats while restoring native plants. In 2021 forty toutouwai (North Island robins) were translocated there from Bushy Park Tarapuruhi, with Rangitāne as kaitiaki partners and Massey University researchers handling capture and transmitters.
North-east of the city, Te Āpiti Manawatū Gorge Scenic Reserve is part of an ongoing DOC pest-control programme that includes toxins, which is why dogs are not allowed. Its tracks pass tawa and podocarp forest and the giant maidenhair fern, found only in the Manawatū. Closer to town, Wildbase Recovery in Victoria Esplanade shows the rehabilitation side of conservation, with around 40 per cent of its patients on DOC's rare and endangered list.
