Studying wildlife conservation from Hamilton
Hamilton is the only large urban area in New Zealand with significant populations of long-tailed bats (pekapeka-tou-roa) living in the city. The bats are concentrated in the south, in deep gully systems and along the Waikato River. In 2022 Hamilton City Council's Environment Committee endorsed a strategy from the Waikato Bat Alliance, a partnership of councils, iwi groups including Waikato-Tainui, and the Department of Conservation.
Birds are part of the same story. Waikato Regional Council's Hamilton Halo project boosts tūī breeding at key sites within 20 km of the city through predator control and encourages year-round food planting. Tūī numbers in Hamilton rose 25-fold between 2004 and 2019. Hamilton Zoo runs a breed-for-release programme for North Island kākā, and birds go to designated sanctuaries after quarantine.
