Studying horticulture from Hamilton
Hamilton Gardens gives a horticulture student a lot to study in one place. Its themed gardens are grouped into five collections. The Productive Collection covers a Kitchen Garden, Herb Garden, Sustainable Backyard Garden, Ancient Egyptian Garden and Te Parapara. The Cultivar Collection holds the Rogers Rose Garden, Hammond Camellia Garden, Victorian Flower Garden and Rhododendron Lawn.
Te Parapara Garden demonstrates traditional Māori skills for growing kūmara and other tropical crops in a cooler climate. It is on a site linked to Ngāti Wairere food-harvesting rituals. In Temple View, Taitua Arboretum holds 20 hectares of mature trees planted by John and Bunny Mortimer from 1973 and is now managed by Hamilton City Council, which makes it useful for studying tree selection and long-term planting.
