Nature park management examples in Wellington

Wellington's protected areas are run under several different models. Zealandia is managed by the Karori Sanctuary Trust, a community-led charity. It relies on more than 500 volunteers, who fill roles from digging drains and skippering the boat to checking the 8.6 km fence. Ōtari-Wilton's Bush is managed by Wellington City Council, whose on-site Wellington Gardens team looks after the gardens, forest and tracks, while a separate charitable trust supports it through advocacy, volunteering and research funding. Zealandia's Kia Mouriora Te Kaiwharawhara (Sanctuary to Sea) project takes restoration beyond the fence, and the Lions Ōtari Plant Conservation Laboratory supports conservation science at Ōtari.

Matiu/Somes Island shows co-governance. Taranaki Whānui own it after a Treaty settlement, a Kaitiaki Board governs it, and DOC manages it with visitor limits and biosecurity checks. Greater Wellington's Battle Hill Farm Forest Park balances camping, horse riding, mountain biking and walking with a working farm, closing areas for lambing and calving.

Nature Park Management in Wellington: questions

Who runs Wellington's main nature sites?

It varies. Zealandia is run by the Karori Sanctuary Trust, and Ōtari-Wilton's Bush by Wellington City Council with a supporting trust. Matiu/Somes Island is owned by Taranaki Whānui, governed by a Kaitiaki Board and managed by DOC. Battle Hill is a Greater Wellington regional park.

How does Matiu/Somes Island limit visitor impact?

DOC limits visitor numbers on busy days, bans smoking and fires, and may close the island in extreme fire danger. All visitors complete a biosecurity self-check on the ferry and clean their footwear on arrival. There are no catering facilities or drinking water, so visitors bring their own supplies and remove their rubbish.
