Around 300 square kilometres of fertile farmland southwest of Dunedin, with Mosgiel at its northeastern edge. Dairy and sheep farming dominate, and deer farming is becoming more important.
Working dairy, sheep and deer country within Dunedin's own boundary, where students can see these farm systems side by side.
Taieri A&P Show, Mosgiel (opens in a new tab)
A long-running agricultural and pastoral show at the Taieri Showgrounds in Mosgiel; the 166th show was held in January 2026 with livestock competitions and blade-shearing demonstrations.
A chance to watch livestock judging and talk to Taieri farmers and breeders in one place.
Invermay Agricultural Centre (opens in a new tab)
A research centre near Mosgiel on the Taieri Plain specialising in genomics, animal reproduction, land management and biosecurity, where New Zealand's deer farming research programme began in 1972.

Otago Farmers Market (opens in a new tab)
A food-only farmers market run by a charitable trust, held every Saturday morning in the north car park of Dunedin Railway Station since 2003. Vendors sell what they produce directly to customers.
