Studying marine life from Tauranga

Tauranga Harbour is the main focus of marine research in the western Bay of Plenty. The University of Waikato's Coastal Marine Field Station at Sulphur Point supports field research and training across the harbour and the wider bay. Its seaweed aquaculture facility shows that harbour research covers food production as well as ecology. The university also plans a new marine research and education centre at Marine Park, Sulphur Point, with aquariums, touch tanks and public programmes. Construction is expected to start in 2028.

Offshore, Tūhua (Mayor Island) is 35 km from the harbour entrance, and the 1,060-hectare marine reserve around it has been protected since 1992. DOC describes underwater lava columns, caves and kelp-covered boulders, with kingfish and maomao schooling over them. The island is privately owned, so landing needs prior arrangement with the Tūhua Trust Board. Most visitors reach the reserve on charter boats.
