Practising marine studies in Napier
Napier's marine life is easiest to see at two very different sites. On Marine Parade, the National Aquarium of New Zealand has run since 1976 and includes an Oceanarium where divers hand-feed the animals. Its Penguin Cove is also a rehabilitation centre for sick or injured little penguins (kororā); birds that recover go back to the wild, while those that cannot survive there stay on at the Cove.
At the northern end of the city, the Ahuriri Estuary is what remains of a lagoon raised by the 1931 earthquake. From the DOC walking track and boardwalk you can watch wading birds, fish, mud-dwelling invertebrates and aquatic plants, which makes it a good place to see how tidal habitats work. Access is from Humber Street, off Pandora Road, and an alternative route along Embankment Road can be used when high tide covers the path.
Marine Studies in Napier: questions
Where can I see marine animal care in Napier?
The National Aquarium of New Zealand on Marine Parade runs a little penguin rehabilitation centre called Penguin Cove and offers a Native Icons guided tour that includes behind-the-scenes areas and insight into penguin rescue. Its Oceanarium has divers hand-feeding the animals.
What should I do if I find an injured penguin on Napier's coast?
The National Aquarium asks the public to phone the Department of Conservation on 0800 DOC HOT. Penguin Cove at the aquarium cares for sick or injured little penguins and returns them to the wild once they recover.
