Park management examples near Tauranga
Tauranga has three quite different park management models within easy reach. McLaren Falls Park is a 190-hectare council park beside Lake McLaren, about ten minutes from the city. Its managers run camping at four sites, year-round licensed fishing, walking tracks and a glow-worm track, plus access to Marshalls Animal Park. Te Puna Quarry Park, by contrast, is maintained entirely by volunteers, more than 100 of them, on the site of an old quarry.
At a larger scale, DOC manages the Kaimai Mamaku Conservation Park. The park stretches from Karangahake Gorge almost to Rotorua and has more than 360 km of walking and tramping tracks. Its vegetation ranges from dense low-altitude forest to windblown scrub and grassland, and DOC notes it marks the edge of several tree species' natural ranges.
