Studying nature park management from Hamilton

Waiwhakareke Natural Heritage Park is an active example of turning farmland back into native habitat. The park covers more than 65.5 hectares and is being restored to the wetland and forest habitats of the Hamilton Basin around Lake Waiwhakareke (Horseshoe Lake). Its restoration plans include a predator exclusion fence and a wildlife rehabilitation facility.

The park sits across the road from Hamilton Zoo, and both belong to Te Kaaroro Nature Precinct, which also includes Hamilton Observatory. That means visitor management, education and restoration all happen on adjoining sites. Hamilton City Council looks after Taitua Arboretum, a 20-hectare tree park in Temple View that was gifted to the city.

Can I volunteer on ecological restoration in Hamilton?

Waiwhakareke Natural Heritage Park takes volunteers to help restore native habitats, and its page says no experience is necessary. Enquiries go to waiwhakareke@hcc.govt.nz.

What is Te Kaaroro Nature Precinct?

Te Kaaroro Nature Precinct is a group of sites in Hamilton. It includes Hamilton Zoo, Waiwhakareke Natural Heritage Park and Hamilton Observatory, so a zoo and a restoration park can be visited on adjoining sites.
