Studying birds from Napier
Few New Zealand cities have as many kinds of birdlife within a short drive. The Ahuriri Estuary, on the city's northern edge, is used by more than 70 species of resident and migratory waterbirds; bar-tailed godwits/kuaka, knots and golden plovers arrive each year from arctic breeding grounds. South-east of the city, the Cape Kidnappers gannet reserve holds nesting gannet colonies, and DOC suggests visiting between early November and late February. Visitors have to stay behind the barriers or at least five metres from nesting birds.
Kiwi care can be seen at two places. The National Aquarium's guided tour enters a nocturnal kiwi habitat and shows a kiwi egg up close, and Cape Sanctuary on the Cape Kidnappers peninsula now holds around six hundred Eastern brown kiwi, built up from 78 founder birds released in 2007 and 2008.
Bird Care in Napier: questions
When is the best time to see the Cape Kidnappers gannets?
DOC says the best viewing is between early November and late February. The track from the beach to the plateau colony is closed from July to the week before Labour Weekend, and the beach route can only be walked around low tide, so check DOC's page before you go.
Which migratory birds visit the Ahuriri Estuary?
Hawke's Bay Tourism notes that bar-tailed godwits/kuaka, knots and golden plovers migrate to the estuary each year from their arctic breeding grounds. In all, more than 70 resident and migratory waterbird species use it for feeding and resting.
