Sheep and cattle farming around Dunedin
Dunedin's boundary takes in serious farmland. The Taieri Plain southwest of the city covers about 300 square kilometres, with Mosgiel at its northeastern edge and Outram on the plain, and dairy and sheep farming dominate. Further inland, the Strath Taieri district is centred on Middlemarch.
Both districts hold annual A&P shows. The Taieri A&P Show in Mosgiel, which reached its 166th edition in January 2026, includes livestock competitions and blade-shearing demonstrations. The Strath Taieri A&P Show at Middlemarch held its 122nd show in March 2026.
Near Mosgiel, the Invermay Agricultural Centre has been a base for research into genomics, animal reproduction and land management, and is where New Zealand's deer farming research programme began in 1972.

What kind of farming happens on the Taieri Plain?
The Taieri Plain is about 300 square kilometres of fertile land southwest of Dunedin. Dairy and sheep farming dominate, and deer farming is becoming more important. Mosgiel sits at its northeastern edge.
Are there A&P shows near Dunedin?
Yes. The Taieri A&P Show is held in January at the Taieri Showgrounds in Mosgiel, with livestock competitions and shearing demonstrations. The Strath Taieri A&P Show is held in Middlemarch in March, on the Sunday of Otago Anniversary weekend.
