Massey University farms (opens in a new tab)
Massey operates six farm units covering just over 2,000 hectares, including two dairy units, two sheep and beef farms, a deer unit and a mixed dairy-support farm. Most of the farmland is near the Manawatū campus.
The farms are used for teaching and research, and Massey takes visit requests through its farm contact page.
Feilding saleyards (opens in a new tab)
Livestock saleyards in central Feilding where more than 50,000 cattle and 450,000 sheep are sold each year, with store stock sold on Fridays.
Weekly Friday tours led by local farmers walk visitors through the sheep pens and the cattle rostrum to see the auction process.
AgResearch (Bioeconomy Science Institute), Palmerston North (opens in a new tab)
AgResearch, now a group within the Bioeconomy Science Institute, has one of its two national centres in Palmerston North. Its stated mission is a strong, sustainable pastoral agricultural sector.
Its published research on pasture and livestock is useful background reading, and its presence shapes the city's agricultural science community.
