Animal & wildlife near Hamilton

Places in and around Hamilton where you can see this field in action.

  • Hamilton Zoo (opens in a new tab)

A 25-hectare zoo within Te Kaaroro Nature Precinct, home to more than 450 exotic and native animals. It contributes to endangered-species breeding programmes, including a breed-for-release programme for North Island kākā housed in its Free Flight Aviary.

Students of animal care, zoology or bird care can observe how a working zoo manages mammals, birds, reptiles and amphibians, and its education programmes and animal encounters give a close look at keeper practice.

  • SPCA Hamilton Centre (opens in a new tab)

The SPCA's Hamilton centre is at 49 Northway Street, Te Rapa. It takes enquiries from people who want to volunteer at the centre, foster animals or help at the Hamilton Op Shop.

Animal welfare and vet assistant students can apply to volunteer or foster, which gives hands-on experience with rescued animals.

  • Long-tailed bats (pekapeka-tou-roa) and the Waikato Bat Alliance (opens in a new tab)

Hamilton is the only large urban area in New Zealand with significant long-tailed bat populations living in the city, mostly in the southern gullies and along the Waikato River. In 2022 Hamilton City Council's Environment Committee endorsed a Waikato Bat Alliance strategy for the species.

Wildlife conservation students can follow a real urban conservation programme for a critically endangered native mammal and learn how councils, iwi and DOC plan habitat protection.

  • Hamilton Halo (opens in a new tab)

A Waikato Regional Council project that boosts tūī breeding at key sites within 20 km of Hamilton through predator control, and encourages planting so the birds have food all year. Tūī numbers in the city rose 25-fold between 2004 and 2019.

Bird care and wildlife management students can study a measurable example of how predator control and food planting change urban bird numbers.

Beyond happy with my experience

I’ve loved my journey. I’ve learnt so much. I love how the tutors are there when you need you need them. Even if they don’t or can’t respond straight away I’m confident they can get back to me as soon as they can. I would recommend these guys to anyone who wants to study a course.

I love the flexibility of the course and how well your enquires are answered and how quickly once you enquire about the course you hear back from the team. I work full time and often have to work on weekends so I love how no matter what someone’s always happy to help. Would recommend this service to anyone who doesn’t have a lot of spare time
