Reptile conservation in Dunedin

Orokonui Ecosanctuary near Waitati is the main place around Dunedin to see native reptiles in a protected habitat. Tuatara and jewelled geckos are among the species reintroduced behind its predator-proof fence, and volunteers carry out regular lizard monitoring.

The fence is built to keep out climbing and burrowing predators, which is the main threat to native lizards on the mainland, so the sanctuary is a working example of how predator exclusion supports reptile recovery.

The Dunedin Wildlife Hospital has also treated tuatara, which shows that reptile care is part of native wildlife rehabilitation in the city.

Where can I see tuatara near Dunedin?

Tuatara have been reintroduced at Orokonui Ecosanctuary, about a 20-minute drive from Dunedin near Waitati, together with jewelled geckos and kākā. The sanctuary is enclosed by a 1.9-metre fence designed to keep out climbing and burrowing animals.

Are there volunteer tasks involving lizards?

Orokonui volunteers carry out regular tasks such as lizard monitoring and pest tracking. Volunteers contribute around 13,000 hours a year to the sanctuary.
